1. Acceptance of these terms
By accessing or using Research OS, you agree to these Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the application or connect a third-party account.
Research OS is currently an independent software project with limited availability. Access may be provided only to specific authorized users while development continues.
2. What Research OS provides
Research OS is a desktop workspace intended to help users organize research notes, references, tags, tasks, schedules, and related information. It may offer optional integrations, including bidirectional synchronization with Google Calendar.
The application is a productivity and information-management tool. It does not provide scientific, medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice, and it does not guarantee the accuracy or completeness of user-created records.
3. Eligibility and authority
You may use Research OS only if you can legally agree to these terms and are permitted to use the application under applicable law and any rules of your institution or organization. If you connect an institutional Google account, you represent that you are authorized to grant the requested access.
Research OS is not directed to children under 13.
4. Your responsibilities
You are responsible for:
- protecting your device, operating-system account, local vault credentials, and backups;
- reviewing the Google permissions shown before connecting an account;
- ensuring you have the right to store or synchronize the information you place in Research OS;
- checking important records and calendar changes before relying on them;
- complying with applicable laws, institutional policies, and third-party terms; and
- maintaining independent backups of information that you cannot afford to lose.
You must not use Research OS to violate law, infringe another person’s rights, gain unauthorized access, distribute malware, interfere with services, or misuse Google APIs or other third-party systems.
5. Google services and third-party integrations
Google Calendar integration is optional. If you connect a Google account, you authorize Research OS to access and act on Calendar data within the permissions displayed by Google and only for the synchronization features you choose to use.
Your use of Google services remains subject to Google’s applicable terms and policies. Research OS does not control Google’s availability, data retention, account restrictions, or API behavior. A change or outage in a third-party service may interrupt or alter an integration.
You may disconnect Research OS within the application or revoke access through your Google Account third-party connections. Disconnecting stops future synchronization but does not automatically delete calendar events already stored by Google.
6. Your content and privacy
You retain your rights in the notes, records, calendar information, and other content you place in Research OS. These terms do not transfer ownership of that content to the Research OS operator.
You grant only the limited permission needed for the application to process your content on your device and communicate with services you choose to connect. How the application accesses, uses, stores, shares, and deletes data is described in the Privacy Policy.
7. Changes and availability
Research OS is under active development. Features may be added, changed, suspended, or removed. File formats, synchronization behavior, and system requirements may change between versions. Reasonable efforts may be made to communicate material changes, but uninterrupted availability is not guaranteed.
Access may be limited to development, testing, or authorized use. Nothing on this website constitutes an offer of public access or a commitment to release a particular feature.
8. Disclaimers
Research OS is provided “as is” and “as available.” To the maximum extent permitted by law, no express or implied warranty is made regarding reliability, availability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, data preservation, synchronization accuracy, or freedom from defects.
You should independently verify important deadlines, appointments, experimental records, and other critical information. Research OS is not a substitute for an appropriate backup system or an institutionally approved system of record.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the Research OS operator will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, research time, opportunity, revenue, or goodwill arising from use of or inability to use Research OS or a connected third-party service.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.
10. Ending use
You may stop using Research OS at any time. Before removing the application, export or back up any information you wish to retain, disconnect connected accounts, and delete local data as appropriate.
Access may be suspended or ended if use creates a security risk, violates these terms, violates applicable law, or threatens third-party systems. Sections that by their nature should continue—such as ownership, disclaimers, limitations of liability, and general legal terms—survive termination.
11. General terms
Updates to these terms
These terms may be revised as the application changes. The effective date will be updated when revised terms are posted. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised terms to the extent permitted by law.
Severability and waiver
If a provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect. Failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of the right to do so later.
Assignment
You may not assign these terms without prior written permission. The operator may assign these terms as part of a permitted reorganization, transfer, or succession, subject to applicable privacy obligations.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Japan, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, except where mandatory local law provides otherwise.
